EPA LEAD RRP RENOVATOR INITIAL TRAINING

Course Description:

The EPA Lead Renovator Initial Training course is designed for contractors, maintenance personnel, property managers, painters, carpenters, remodelers, and other professionals who perform renovation, repair, or painting activities in housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978.

This comprehensive course provides the knowledge and hands-on skills required to become an EPA Certified Renovator under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule (40 CFR Part 745). Participants will learn how to safely perform renovation activities that disturb lead-based paint while protecting building occupants, workers, and the surrounding environment from lead exposure.

Course topics include:

• Health effects of lead exposure
• Overview of the EPA RRP Rule and regulatory requirements
• Identifying lead hazards and determining when the RRP Rule applies
• Containment and work area setup
• Lead-safe work practices
• Prohibited renovation methods
• Dust minimization and control techniques
• Cleaning and cleaning verification procedures
• Proper waste handling and disposal
• Required documentation and recordkeeping
• Hands-on exercises demonstrating lead-safe renovation procedures

Upon successful completion of the course, including the required hands-on skills assessment and final examination, participants will receive an EPA Lead Renovator certificate and become eligible to perform and supervise lead-safe renovation work in accordance with the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule. The certificate is valid for 5 years.

*This certification is required for all home improvement activities that disturb more than 6 square feet (interior) or more than 20 square feet (exterior) of paint in any housing built before 1978 that has not been certified as lead-based paint free. Individuals and firms that are not certified could face fines of up to $37,500 per day.
